When handling the affairs of a deceased person, it’s essential to freeze their bank accounts to prevent any unnecessary expenses from being deducted. Each bank has its own bereavement policy and specific forms that must be completed to initiate this process. Below, you will find links to the relevant forms and contact details for various banks.
Important Documentation
To proceed with freezing the account, banks typically require:
Photo Identification of the Executor: This should be government-issued and current, for example, a passport or driver's licence.
Certified Copies of the Death Certificate: These must be certified by an authorised individual as true copies of the original. The easiest way to do this is to bring the original death certificate and photo ID to the bank and one of the bank staff will photocopy the original and then sign and certify that it is a true and correct copy. This can also be done by a solicitor, commissioner for oaths, accountant, barrister or notary public, however, they may charge for their services.
