When a loved one passes away, settling the practical matters such as funeral expenses becomes a pressing concern. It is really important to get an invoice from the funeral directors and keep a copy of all expenses and receipts so that you can be reimbursed by the estate.

In some cases, banks offer a convenient option of providing a bank draft to the funeral director to cover the costs. While it is not necessary to obtain a grant of probate for this a death certificate may be needed and it depends on the bank whether they offer this option.

In the case where a relative has paid the funeral bill, the bank typically releases funds directly to the relative who made the payment after the grant of probate and submission of the relevant receipts. Banks and other financial institutions have a standard form that needs to be filled, and in certain cases, a death certificate may be required.

If you are having trouble paying for a funeral, you can get advice from Citizens Information or the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), which is a free, confidential, independent service staffed by trained money advisers.
